Incidents of rape and land grabbing, tarnished humanity: CM Vishnu Deo Sai

Sai urges West Bengal CM to rise above political consideration and take decision in interest of humanity

Voicing concern over the alleged sexual abuse of women and land grabbing by TMC supporters in Sandeshkhali in West Bengal, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai today wrote a letter to his counterpart Mamata Banerjee, demanding immediate intervention and stringent action against the culprits.

The chief minister termed the reports given by the National Tribal Commission as “gruesome” and “horrifying”.
“Injustice against mothers and sisters that have come to light in Sandeshkhali area of your state is heart-wrenching. Incidents like brutal rape of more than 50 women belonging to tribal communities, grabbing the land from thousands of tribals and even snatching away MNREGA wages from them, have tarnished humanity, Sai wrote in his letter.

The chief minister further wrote that putting the lives of tribals in danger in the state and tarnishing their honour merely for appeasement and vote bank politics is beyond tolerance. He added that it is highly condemnable that such a situation should arise under your leadership.
History has it that the movement for women empowerment started from Bengal province. Bengal is the land of Swami Vivekananda, Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, whose cultural richness is known to the world, Sai said.

“In such a conscious state, civilized society cannot tolerate the atrocities being committed against the deprived sections of the society. Being the Chief Minister of West Bengal, it is expected that you will intervene strongly, give instructions for immediate action and give strict punishment to the culprits.” he added.
The chief minister urged Banerjee to rise above the politics and take stringent action against the criminals.

“I hope you will rise above political considerations and take decisions in this matter related to the interest of humanity. I urge you to take legal action against criminals like Shahjahan, Sirajuddin along with their political protectors,” he said.
