Bengaluru, Feb 28 (IANS) Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted that her team had an off day as they suffered a crushing nine-wicket defeat against Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. “I think today was one of those days when things didn’t go according to plan,” Harmanpreet said after the match.
“We struggled to score runs in the first six overs, got some rhythm in the middle overs, but we were not able to continue that. 120 was never going to be enough against a good side. We did everything right in the last three games and are still in a good position. I would like to tell the team to just forget this game because there are more important matches coming up,” she added.
Delhi Capitals, led by a masterclass from Meg Lanning and a disciplined bowling performance, made light work of Mumbai’s total, chasing down 124 with 35 balls to spare.
Mumbai’s struggles began early as they lost wickets at regular intervals after opting to bat first. Despite a steady start from Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews, the innings lacked momentum. Jess Jonassen (3-25) and Minnu Mani (3-17) were the chief destroyers, ensuring MI remained on the back foot.
Shikha Pandey provided DC’s first breakthrough, dismissing Bhatia (11) in the PowerPlay. Annabel Sutherland’s tight spell further stifled MI, leading to Matthews’ dismissal for 22. The middle order failed to fire, with Harmanpreet Kaur (22) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (18) falling in quick succession. MI’s lower order couldn’t salvage the innings, as Jonassen and Mani ripped through the lineup to restrict them to a modest 123/9.
Chasing 124, DC got off to a dominant start. Meg Lanning (60 not out off 49) and Shafali Verma (43 off 28) put Mumbai’s bowlers under immense pressure. Lanning, in particular, showcased her class, punishing loose deliveries and reaching her record-breaking eighth WPL fifty. Despite a lone wicket for Amanjot Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues (15 *) ensured no hiccups as DC cruised to victory, reaching the target in just 14.1 overs. Lanning fittingly sealed the win with a well-placed two through midwicket.
With this victory, Delhi Capitals move to the top of the WPL table, while Mumbai will look to bounce back in their next fixture.
