Ram Sampath says he’s obsessed with sound textures, sometimes his team gets mad: What is he chasing?

Mumbai, Aug 23 (IANS) Music composer Ram Sampath, who is known for ‘Delhi Belly’, ‘Fukrey’ and more recently ‘Laapataa Ladies’, has said that he is obsessed with sound textures. The composer shared that his obsession even goes to a point where his associates often ask, “What is he even chasing?”.

Ram spoke with IANS, and shared that for him a genre is hard wired to a sound texture, and can only be gotten right when all the instruments during the programming fall in place correctly.

He said, “I’m obsessed with sound textures, and I believe that every genre has a texture of its own. There are ways in which you can amplify it and there are ways in which you can emotionally resonate with the audience”.

The composer told IANS that every arrangement goes through multiple iterations. He shared, “Sometimes it drives people mad as they think, ‘What the hell am I chasing?’ But in the end, it all works out for the best”.

The composer feels that one loses alone but wins as a team. Talking about some of the best moments in his career spanning 2 decades, he said, “For me, some of the best moments in the industry have been when I worked with a team that shared a collective vision and pushed in the same direction. The fact that such projects clicked with the people, just adds to the sweetness of that moment”.

Ram recently created a track for Birla Opus’ ‘Make Life Beautiful’ campaign. Sharing the insights about crafting music for animated characters, he said, “Creating ‘Duniya ko Rang Do’ for Birla Opus’ was an absolute joy because you rarely get to work with such beautiful storytelling. I really enjoyed making this track. I made it 10 minutes after the meeting was over, it just came to me. My frequent collaborator Munna Dhiman furnished the lyrics, and he has crafted a simple yet compelling piece”.
