Scheme proving to be a boon for economically weaker sections in serious ailment treatment

Raipur, 26 February 2024

In a significant testament to the efficacy of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, 71-year-old Shri Gayaram Sahu from Bemetara district recently underwent a successful knee operation, availing the benefits of the scheme. Suffering from prolonged knee pain, Shri Sahu struggled to find relief despite seeking treatment from various doctors and even trying Ayurvedic medicine.

Speaking about his condition, Shri Sahu stated, “I was suffering from knee pain for a long time. I got relief from pain after the operation. I sought treatment from many doctors and also tried Ayurvedic medicine. However, the pain was not subsiding. An expenditure of Rs 2 to 4 lakh for the treatment was reported by a private hospital. Due to my poor financial condition, I was not in a position to bear the said amount.”

However, relief finally came when doctors at District Hospital Bemetara diagnosed his condition and recommended a knee replacement procedure. On February 22, a team of medical professionals, led by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Shilp Verma, successfully performed the operation. Post-surgery, Shri Sahu was guided through his recovery, including walking with the aid of a walker and maintaining a regimen of mild exercises and prescribed medications.

Expressing his gratitude, Shri Sahu extended heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, acknowledging the support provided under the scheme. “I am feeling fine and relieved now,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana aims to provide free treatment facilities up to Rs 5 lakh to economically weaker citizens, ensuring access to essential healthcare services.
