Madhya Pradesh becomes front-runner state in NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index 2023-24

Madhya Pradesh has become the front-runner state in NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index 2023-24 with an overall score of 67. The state has performed excellently in Goal-12 responsible consumption and production, Goal-15 life on land, Goal-7 affordable and clean energy, Goal-6 clean water and sanitation, Goal-11 sustainable urban and community development, and Goal-1 poverty alleviation. In the year 2020-21, Madhya Pradesh was the performing state with 62 points.

The target-wise scores of Madhya Pradesh in Sustainable Development Goals in SDG India Index 2023-24 are as follows:

According to the index, Madhya Pradesh has lifted 1.36 crore persons out of multidimensional poverty. 97.87 percent of beneficiaries in the state are getting coverage under the National Food Security Act. The percentage of institutional deliveries out of total deliveries is 98.48 percent. The percentage of fully vaccinated children in the age group of 9 to 11 months is 93.19 percent. The sex ratio at birth in the state is 956 against the target of 950. Electricity has reached 100 percent of the houses in the state. The percentage of women account holders in Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is 55.57 percent against the target of 50 percent. Under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, the percentage of targeted settlements connected with roads is 99.98 percent. Women’s representation in Panchayati Raj institutions is 50 percent against the target of 33 percent The percentage of industries complying with environmental standards is 98.40 percent while the forest cover area as a percentage of geographical area is 25.14 percent.

It is notable that the SDG India Index largely determines the ranking of states and union territories based on the progress they have made towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. This index calculates target-wise scores on 16 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for each state and union territory. A score of 65 to 99 is classified as a front-runner.
