My salutations to Gurus on the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima. My sincere gratitude to all the Gurus, who enrich their students with knowledge and inspire them achieve desired goals.
Guru guides disciples, imparts knowledge to them and bring glory and helping them achieve desired goals. In the Guru-Shishya parampara, self-realization is possible with the help of Guru.
Guru Purnima is an occasion of realizing the knowledge. Guru Purnima is also called Vyas Purnima. It is believed that on Guru Purnima Maharishi Ved Vyas was born. Maharishi Vyas compiled the Vedic hymns, classified the Vedas, and enriched the Indian literature with the Mahabharata and Holy Scriptures. The Guru-Shishya tradition is very rich tradition. Guru guides his students and prepares them for nation-building.
Today on the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima, I remember great spiritual Guru Sandeepani, who was dedicated himself to building of the society and the nation. The life of Guru Sandepani, who spent his life nourishing disciples and society about 5 thousand years ago, is an ideal for all of us. His life was full of sufferings. His dedication towards the nation building and has been remarkable, unique, is unmatched in the world. Sandeepani ashram was originally established at Banaras on the banks of Ganga, where he had a Gurukul to train his disciples by imparting education in 64 art forms, 14 disciplines, 18 Puranas, and 4 Vedas.
It was the time when Kansa ruled in Mathura. He dethroned Maharaj Ugrasen. Acharyas including Guru Sandeepani had to wind up their Gurukuls. He left his ashram and set out for the pilgrimage. Managing a Gurukul in such an environment was not possible. Acharya Sandeepani, his 6-month-old son Punardatta, and his wife were passing through the area of Prabhas Patan in Western India (present-day Dwarka). This was the time when demonic powers had captured India.
Acharya Sandeepani’s name was known far and wide. Everyone wanted Sandeepani to be teacher of their children. Yama demonic persons put pressure on Acharya Sandeepani to teach his children. Since Acharya Sandeepani taught only for nation and society building, he refused to succumb to pressure. Despite being intimidated, and tortured by Yama, the Acharya did not give in and stuck to his decision. While torturing the Acharya, the rulers freed his child, and insulted the Acharya and forced them to flee.
Later, Acharya came to Ujjain and established Ashram and started imparting education to build the country’s future citizens in Ujjain, the city of Lord Mahakal. Lord Shri Krishna and his brother Balram were sent to Ujjain, the city of Mahakal, to receive education in the Sandeepani Ashram, where they met friend Sudama. On completing their education, Shri Krishna wanted to give Guru Dakshina to the Gurumata. Gurumata considered Shri Krishna as divine personality and asked him for her son as Guru Dakshina. When Acharya Sandeepani came to know about the story, he got angry and said why did you involve my disciple?
Shri Krishna wanted weapons to bring back his son. Acharya told him to go to Janapav, the ashram of Lord Parshuram. Lord Parshuram presented the Sudarshan Chakra to Shri Krishna and explained its power. With the permission of Lord Parshuram, Shri Krishna goes to Prabhas Patan where he defeats and kills Asur Yama, rescues the Acharya’s son, and gives him back in Dakshina to the Guru.
Shri Krishna gives the kingdom of Prabhas Patan to King Raivatak. Balram marries the king’s daughter Revati after which Shri Krishna leaves for Mathura. In the same era, another example of destroying the demonic powers and handing over the kingdom to a capable person is when Lord Shri Krishna reinstated Maharaj Ugrasen on the throne after killing Kansa in Mathura.
All of us need to know the contribution of Acharya Sandeepani to the country. Acharya Sandeepani’s dedication to nourishing disciples with knowledge is remarkable. This inspiration of Acharya Sandeepani should be known to everyone on Guru Purnima.
In my view, five Gurus hold special significance. The first is the Mother who imparts the values, the second is Father who inculcates the spirit of bravery with companionship, support, and cooperation. Third is Teacher who enriches us with academic knowledge. Fourth is the spiritual Teacher, who helps students in self-awakening. The fifth is Mirror, which manifests Truth. Guru nurtures basic talent and guides us. Acharya Sandeepani made disciples who created history for the welfare of society, nation, and the world. I remember Acharya Sandeepani on the occasion of Guru Purnima.
