Imphal, Feb 11 (IANS) The opposition Congress on Tuesday reiterated that they would oppose any move to promulgate President’s rule in Manipur, where Chief Minister N Biren Singh has resigned.

Manipur Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh claimed that the order issued by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Sunday cancelling the budget session of the state Assembly was “illegal and unconstitutional”.

In a post on the X, the Congress leader said: “The order issued by Hon’ble Governor of Manipur dated 9th February 2025, thereby declaring the order dated 24th January 2025 as ‘null and void’ is illegal and unconstitutional. There is no move to summon an Assembly Session even if today is the last day for a constitutionally mandated sitting of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.”

“Constitutional crisis would be faced after a few hours in Manipur. I hope PM Modi wants to impose Manipur under suspended animation or President Rule. We will stand against the move of suspended animation or President’s Rule,” said Meghachandra Singh.

Manipur Governor on Sunday made the Assembly budget session ‘null and void’ hours after Biren Singh quit. The Budget session of the Manipur Assembly was scheduled to start on Monday (February 10) with the customary speech of the Governor and it would have continued till February 24.

On February 14, Chief Minister Biren Singh, who also holds the Finance portfolio, was scheduled to submit the Budget estimates for the financial year 2025-26.

Meghachandra Singh earlier also said that for the people of Manipur, the Congress party would oppose any move to impose President’s Rule in Manipur.

“Congress party wants a democratically elected popular government in Manipur in the larger interests of safeguarding democracy in the state,” said Meghachandra Singh, who is also a member of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened in the trouble-torn Manipur in view of the volatile situation in the northeastern state.

An additional contingent of Manipur police, commandos and Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed in sensitive, vulnerable and mixed-populated areas.

Indian Army’s Spear Corps in a post on the X said that Lieutenant General Abhijit S. Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3-Corps, visited Manipur and reviewed the operational preparedness of formation and units.

“The Corps Commander interacted with troops of Assam Rifles and Manipur police and complimented them for their professionalism and high morale,” the post said.
