Agartala, Feb 12 (IANS) Assam Rifles and Border Security Force (BSF) separately seized and destroyed marijuana (ganja), foreign cigarettes and other contraband valued at Rs 6.65 crore in Tripura, officials said on Wednesday.
A Defence spokesman said that Assam Rifles troops in a crackdown on narcotics smuggling, successfully seized 351 kg and destroyed approximately 1,089 kg of marijuana at Manikyanagar in West Tripura district.
He said that the seized ganja is estimated to be worth Rs 1.58 crore while the destroyed ganja amounts to Rs 3.27 crore.
The operation was carried out in coordination with Customs officials reaffirming the commitment of Assam Rifles to curb the menace of drug trafficking in the northeastern region.
The successful interdiction is part of the ongoing efforts by Assam Rifles to counter illegal activities along the border areas and ensure national security. The para-military force remains vigilant and committed to disrupting narcotics smuggling networks operating in the northeast, the spokesman said.
A BSF spokesperson said that adopting a non-lethal strategy, the border guarding force in the Tripura frontier on Wednesday successfully foiled attempts of infiltration and smuggling from Bangladesh.
The BSF jawans seized sunglasses, foreign cigarettes at Srinagar in South Tripura district, bordering Bangladesh.
In another operation along the India-Bangladesh border cannabis, codeine based syrups and other contrabands were also seized from Sepahijala district.
The BSF remains committed to maintain vigil along the border and to prevent illegal activities along the Indo-Bangladesh border, the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, the Tripura Police earlier this week seized a large quantity of Methamphetamine tablets also known as Yaba tablets, valued at over Rs 30 crore and arrested three drug peddlers.
The Tripura Police in Dhalai district intercepted a truck carrying 9.24 lakh Yaba tablets valued at Rs 28 crore and arrested the driver and his assistant, both residents of Assam.
The police had intercepted another vehicle in North Tripura district, recovered 50,000 Yaba tablets valued at Rs 2.5 crore from a hidden compartment and arrested the driver of the car.
